<p>Those who went to the Regensburg Rally in September 2000 were delighted to see a Fend Flitzer driving through the streets under its own power. Owned by Robert Eder from the town of Weilheim in Southern Germany, this car is in almost original condition. Built in 1951 and equipped with a 4.5hp Reidel engine, it successfully negotiated the route to Regensburg town centre where all the cars were displayed.</p>

<p>Fritz Fend was obviously proud of this rare example of his early work still in existence and posed for photographs before the assembled crowd. During the Rally, Fend was asked to give some talks about the development of the Flitzer, 175, and KR200. He politely avoided questions about production numbers and dates of detail changes concentrating instead on accounts of how the Messerschmitt was born out of the Flitzer.</p>
<p>Fend spoke of the time, just after the war, when the Americans were in control and Germany was governed Henry Morgentau who was chief of the Finance Ministry between the years 1944-1955 -. Germany was to be reduced to an agricultural state, deprived of the means for industrial production. As Fend put it: “We were simply to have a roof over our heads”. By 1946, the Americans perceived a greater threat to the East from the growing power of the Soviet block and the draconian de-industrialisation plan was gradually abandoned.</p>
<p>Fend set up a manufacturing operation in Rosenheim where he began to develop a vehicle that could be built in spite of technical restrictions. These vehicles gave mobility to many ex-military men who had suffered limb amputations. As a result the Association of German War-Wounded (VdK) noticed his work and this provided the support he needed via the Americans.</p>
<p>In.June 1948, the first Flitzer ran through the streets of Rosenheim and by September 1948 the prototype of the power driven Flitzer was created. In March 1950 the 2.5 h.p. Fichtel and Sachs engine was replaced by a 4.5. h.p. Riedel engine. This engine is almost egg shaped in construction and was first used in the famous ME262 Jet fighter-bomber. The small physical size allowed it to fit within the confines of the jet engine nacelle where it was used to start the turbine. It is fitted with a hand starting mechanism operated by a key inserted into the side of the engine. When used on the Flitzer, there is a mechanical linkage to a foot operated starter pedal located next to the drivers right foot. It can also be started by using the “key” always a source of amusement as it appears that the car is being wound up like a clockwork mouse! Reliability was convincingly demonstrated by a drive over the Grossglockner Pass. By December 1951 around 150 of the 4.5 h.p. Flitzers had been delivered, and the existing site in Rosenheim could not meet the heavy demand.</p>
<p>Fend searched for an alternative manufacturing site and eventually discovered Regensburg Steel and Metal Construction Company (R.S.M.) in Lilienthalstrasse, West Regensburg. There Fend worked on a larger version of the Flitzer capable of carrying two people. Unveiled in March 1953, to great public acclaim and with a F &#038; S 175 engine, the KR 175 was born. The great Messerschmitt story had begun!</p>

<h2>The Kabinenroller comes to Britain</h2>
<p>Of the many nations to which the Messerschmitt Kabinenroller was exported its greatest success and warmest welcome was in Great Britain. Londoners saw the export model KR 175 on their streets for the very first time in April 1954. A new trend had begun and in time the amazing little car from Regensburg had established itself as a fashionable sight in our great capital city. But it was not merely the novel configuration of the Kabinenroller that aroused interest. The car was new but the emblem on its nose needed no introduction.</p>

<p>31st August 1954: Seen in London this afternoon was this novel two seater in tandem three-wheeled enclosed motor cycle – which is made by the R.S.M. Messerschmitt Company of Germany. It does 50mph and 120 miles to the gallon, and costs approximately £300.</p>
<p>In 1954 you could have asked, anyone in Britain “what is a Messerschmitt ?” and got the reply, “the aeroplane that gave us a lot of trouble in 1940″. That name, the inscription “Made in Germany”, and the world famous Sachs motor was a guarantee of quality. Even today, more than sixty years later, there are people in Britain who still believe the Kabinenroller was the product of the fertile imagination of the aircraft designer Professor Willy Messerschmitt. But in August1955 the arrival of the first vastly improved model KR 200 in Britain and the astonishing news of the achievement by the KR 200 Super of 25 world records at Hockenheim racetrack, revealed the true identity of the ‘father of the KaRo’. Because the Kabinenroller is an entirely original concept and not merely a development of some other vehicle, any consideration of its history takes place within the context of the life and work of its creator, Ing. (formal German title for professional Engineer) Fritz Fend. Fend was at the summit of his powers in the 1980’s and was still developing new ideas as an innovative and versatile designer in the great tradition of Messerschmitt and Porsche. He can be compared, from the British perspective, to Issigonis or Chapman whose work reflects credit not only on himself but also on his adopted city of Regensburg . He is of the generation which in 1945 faced the task of reconstruction in the Federal Republic of Germany with outstandingly successful results which today are admired throughout the world.</p>
<p>Those who lived through the years 1939-1945 never recall them with any pleasure. But, in retrospect we can identify some developments which were e accelerated in those years with subsequent benefit to mankind. The evolution of jet powered flight is one example and it was Fritz Fend’s intensive development work as a young engineer on the ME262 programme which formed the foundation of mutual respect and confidence between Professor Maessrschmitt and himself which eventually led to the introduction of the KR 175 in March 1953.</p>
<p>To continue after 1945 as an aeronautical engineer as he wished , meant emigration – Fritz Fend rejected this option and instead chose to devote his skills to the rehabilitation of the severely war wounded, particularly those with both legs amputated above the knee, by designing special vehicles and individually adapted Kabinenrollers. British war wounded often found the adapted Kabinenroller an ideal solution to their personal transport problems.<br />
The decision in 1952 of the former Regensburger Stahl und Metalbau Company to produce the Fend Lastenroller, and then the Kabinenroller, created many employment places and is remembered as a major contribution to the city’s post war economic development for which credit is due to Professor Messerschmitt and Fend. Production faltered in 1956, and Herr Fend , in association with Herr Ing. Valentin Knott, did not hesitate to seize the initiative in forming the Fahrzeug und Maschinenbau Regensburg Company in January 1957 thereby securing the future, not only of the Kabinenroller but also all of his employees for many more years. With the arrival in Britain of more and more KaRos the Messerschmitt Owners Club was formed in London in November 1956 and still flourishes with more than 550 members – a tribute to more than 60 years of sustained effort by the Club management. Today our Club is extremely proud of the friendly relationship long established members of Messerschmitt Club Deutschland e.V. with whom we actively co-operate in the sourcing of spare parts to keep Messerschmitts on the road in more than 20 different countries spread over 5 continents. Outside of Europe, the USA was a significant export market and today the Messerschmitt receives wide acclaim in collector’s car circles.</p>
<p>The launch, in May 1958 of the incredible model Tg 500 captured the imagination of Messerschmitt fans in Britain. Impatient for its arrival and when, four months later, it arrived, Messerschmitt fans we were not disappointed. Our Club welcomed Herr and Frau Fend for the first time for the official British launch of the Tiger on 29 September that year at Brands Hatch Circuit In a typical gesture by Ing.Fend while he was in England, and when learning of a Club event in the midlands voluntarily drove 200miles further north to give an unofficial demonstration one day before this amazing sports car was shown to the press and public. Today, the Tg500 is considered to be among the most desirable of the world’s collectors’ cars and its rarity and sporting achievements keep prices astonishingly high.</p>

It was these similarities which gave rise to comparisons with aeroplane parts.&#8221; Fend&#8217;s design for a 2 seater car developed from the Flitzer, was finished in March 1953. With an engine of 175 c.c. producing 9 h.p., the Kabinenroller was put on display to enormous public acclaim. For 2100 Marks two persons were mobile, protected from the weather, and could drive at a speed of 90 km/h. It was even capable of holiday tours across the Alps. At that time, the standard Beetle cost 4150 Marks and second hand models, which might have offered some competition, were unavailable. Sales of the KR 175 Kabinenroller soon rose to an average of 90 per day.</p>
<p>Fend&#8217;s workshop in Rosenheim was very active, and he was commuting every week in his own KR175 between there and Regensburg. Intensive testing was continuously undertaken and after about 2500 had been produced, the KR175 was extensively revised. Most importantly, the in and out automatic clutch operated by the gear lever, which had given a great deal of trouble, was replaced. The new KR175 with Fichtel and Sachs engine was equipped with an electric starter. A separate reverse gearbox was available as an extra at the cost of 400 Marks. By 1954, Fend was already working on the next development that was to become the KR200.</p>
<p>Restoration of the KR 175 is never an easy task. The body has many hand-formed components and was not made with mass production in mind. Complex body shapes make it a restorer&#8217;s nightmare and the low number of survivors increases the research task. Early kick-starter versions are very rare indeed with probably less than 10 existing worldwide. Later electric start versions sold well and were widely available through to 1956 when the new Kr200 came on stream in greater numbers.</p>
<p>Today there is a greater interest in KR175’s despite their low value relative to the Kr200. Even the complex perspex top has become available as a new part. Body restoration was near impossible until recently when Oliver Herbolzheimer took on the job of making many of the panels and restoring old shells. Oliver&#8217;s list shows all the commonly needed panels and he can supply any metal component for the body. Braking systems are similar and KR200 size shoes are used. Wheel bearings and stub-axle diameters are different. Rear end design is totally different with the engine following motorcycle practice of that time, forming part of the rear suspension. A chain-case is bolted directly to the engine with a direct drive from the output shaft. Anyone who has driven a KR175 will notice immediately that most engine vibration is transmitted to the frame and body. The later KR 200 had a fully floating engine supported by 3 rubber mountings. A rigid gear-change linkage adds further opportunities for vibration transmission.</p>
<p>Many engine parts are similar to the KR200 with the gearbox and clutch sharing many components. The Piston is completely different having a nominal 62mm diameter. Transfer port cut-outs are used as the KR200 Schnuerle loop-scavenging system patent was then still owned by DKW. Crankshaft diameter is 20mm against 25mm for the KR200 and exchange or re-built crankshafts are available. While the clutch is similar, the clutch housing is a simple casting with just one small access cover for clutch adjustment. A single contact breaker is located on the dyna-start above the retaining nut. The cam for this is held onto the dynastart with two screws and the fan cover has a cut-out and access plate for timing adjustment.</p>

Early type side lights and red flashers with no chrome inset. Chrome headlamp rims. Hubcaps are not original but were offered by dealers in this style.</p>
<p>This is a Messerschmitt Convertible with a fabric cover in place of a dome. Unfortunately, originals are hard to identify as many were converted from the KR200 limousine when the original Perspex dome was damaged. The original wind deflector was formed from steel and painted silver. Most replicas have a fibreglass wind deflector. Some Classic Car Magazines list the Cabriolet as worth more than the KR200 limousine. However, if this is so, values will surely fall as the numerous replicas appear on the market.</p>

<p>With a shorter windscreen and with detachable side screens, this model is quite rare and sought after even as a replica. The rounded, frameless, sports windscreen makes the car look particularly attractive. A delight to drive on a warm day, but not for the rear passenger! In winter, it is a nightmare with a cold blast of air from the poorly sealed roadster hood, hitting squarely in the centre of your forehead. This attractive car is probably the cause of the pricing confusion in the Classic Car press. Values are generally higher than the other models but excellent replicas abound using parts supplied by a specialist German manufacturer. FMR also offered a factory conversion where the lifting section was exchanged for the KR201 type. To confuse matters further, British examples were rarely recorded as a KR201 in the registration book.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Messerschmitt 200 Super established 25 Long Distance and Period World Records at the Hockenheim Circuit on 29th-30th August 1955. The original car can be seen at the Deutsches Museum, Munich although not with the record breaking engine – the original engine was lost while in storage at F&#038;S Schweinfurt. Normal two stroke tuning was carried out including raising the compression ratio and increasing the carburettor bore raising the output raised to just over 14hp at 5,500 rpm. The special body was fabricated at the Rosenheim works of Ing. Fritz Fend, the inventor and designer of Messerschmitt cars. Aircraft design principles were used to reduce drag to a minimum with specially flared front wings to reduce the drag and turbulence around the front wheels. Trim strips and number plates were eliminated by the use of painted decoration and company ‘eagle’ logo – all aimed at reducing drag. The cockpit too was formed around the driver’s head again using aircraft practice.</p>

<p>The attempt on the Records was carefully planned and supervised by Ing. H.W. Bönsch, the famous motor cycle designer, BMW Director and Vice President of the Technical Committee of FIM. Bönsch knew that the car was capable of lapping the circuit at 116 km/h but he wanted to be sure it could complete the attempt without failure. He carefully calculated the optimum braking and gear change points, marking them on the circuit for other drivers to use. An average lap speed of 105km/h was calculated to allow for service stops of around 60 seconds, including refuelling and driver change.</p>
<p>The 2,000 Kilometre Long Distance World Record was established after 19 hours and 3minutes of relentless hard driving by the little Messerschmitt three-wheeler and this stood for both the 250cc and 350cc classes. The Mean Speed was 105km/h (65.2 mph). The 24 Hour Period World Record, also in the 250cc and 350cc classes, fell to the Messerschmitt after 2,473 km (1,537 miles) at a Mean Speed of 103.0 kph (64 mph).</p>
<p>The object of the attempt was merely to emphasise the already sporting character of the Messerschmitt Cabin Scooter and to clearly demonstrate the reserves built into the Fichtel und Sachs motor. The motor used was the F&#038;S model L with kickstarter in preference to the heavier reversible dynastart-equipped model LDR. The associated lighter flywheel would also assist in engine response and gear changing. Fichtel und Sachs probably recommended this because of the strain imposed on the crankshaft at high RPM due to the forces generated by the heavy Dynastart flywheel. Another advantage, apart from eliminating the drag from the carbon brushes, is that the ignition spark becomes stronger at higher rpm with a magneto ignition system. However, the flywheel proved to be the weak point in extending the record attempt when the riveted hub failed. (see diagram). Huge forces are generated by flywheels at high engine revolutions so it so not surprising that it failed. A smaller rear chain wheel was fitted to give a higher final drive ratio and thus a higher top speed with an oil deflector to reduce turbulence in the oil filled rear drive chaincase.</p>
<p>In accordance with FIM regulations lead plates weighing 60 kg were carried in place of a passenger.</p>

<p>During practice on Saturday 27th August 1955 ‘night specialist’ Dr, Heinz Schwind achieved no less than 31 laps of the Hockenheim Circuit at a constant average speed of 107 kph within a variation of only one second.<br />
The successful outcome of the attempt remains to this day a fine example of the quality of German engineering, painstaking preparation and thorough execution.</p>
<p>At least 3 replicas have been constructed, the first one completed by our own Russel Church after painstaking research on the original car that is currently on display in the Deutsches Museum, Munich.</p>

<p>After winning the World Speed Record for propeller driven aircraft in 1937, the name Messerschmitt was entered for a second time in the list of International World Records. Willi Messerschmitt himself did not celebrate the successful record attempt remarking that “taking account of stretched finances and competition, world records required expenditure and certainly did not result in increased orders”.</p>

With demand for more conventional cars increasing, Fend aimed to address this with the development of the four wheeled TG500. As FMR had taken over production from Messerschmitt in 1956 and this was a new car, it was badged an FMR. Originally intended to be badged the Tiger, this plan had to be dropped as the name was registered to Krupp, however, TG was used as an abbreviation and the car was widely referred to by enthusiasts as the Tiger regardless. An extremely desirable and rare model highly, regarded by enthusiasts.</p>

<p>The Tg 500:  After the KR200 model variants were introduced, tests on the first four wheeled KaRo- the “Tiger” began in September 1957. The sales were aimed at existing KR 200 owners who had developed a faithful following in Germany with the many Karo Clubs. For legal reasons, the “Tiger” could only be called the “Tg” Only 198 examples can be traced of which 160 are known to exist today. The most sought after of Messerschmitts, (though it never bore that name – it was normally registered as an FMR). Sports-car handling and high top speed brought many rally successes in the early sixties, particularly at the hands of Ken Piper. It was so good that the Rally organisers sought to exclude it from competition events where it took on all comers, including the most exotic sports-cars. It has a 460cc air-cooled twin 2-stroke engine, nominally of 26bhp though most have been up-rated now. A Fichtel &#038; Sachs design with four forward and a reverse gearbox with integral differential.</p>
<p>It was seen in all four body variants available on the KR200. With only 26 examples in the U.K. prices are extremely high and around three times that of a KR200.  It’s great but somewhat unreliable compared to a KR200.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Fend started negotiations with Fichtel &amp; Sachs to buy the rights to produce an engine developed by them for the burgeoning small car market in Germany. It is thought they had originally designed this engine type during the war as a starter motor for large aircraft engines. An existing drawing dated 16th December 1955 that shows a Tg type engine design and two well know experts, Hans Friesnig and Dr.Norbert Mylius, believe that the Austrian Rotax company, (well known for two-stroke engines), had an interest in the design. This new design now included a gearbox and differential and was made from components manufactured by various sub-contractors and assembled by FMR. The engine castings were produced from sand mouldings and each required considerable amount of machining to establish flat and square faces to match the two halves. They are generally of inferior quality to the Sachs 200 castings and are often full of blowholes that break through as the casting is machined. As much as two millimetres had to be removed and this could affect the position of the cylinder base relative to the crankshaft. On two stroke engines, even small variations in these dimensions can result in noticeable differences in performance as the port timing is affected. The two crankcase halves are line bored together to give correct dimensional tolerances. Thus each engine is hand built and unique ? a feature normally found only on exotic cars such as Aston-Martin. Unlike the Sachs 200 engine, the tolerance variations do not always allow different crankcase halves to be interchanged. This makes repairs to the crankcases especially difficult in the case of damage caused by a big-end bearing failure. Tg?s always had a bad reputation for oil leaks, a common feature because of these casting defects. Great care is necessary when re-building the engine to make sure everything is properly sealed.</p>
<p>Ingineur Adeuard Ernst was responsible for development of the engine within FMR and local manufacture of components in small batches meant that specials could be made to suit specific requirements. Ernst made many tests personally and developed the Tg for competition. Eventually he became frustrated with developing Tg?s for other people and asked Fend if he could have a Tg for himself. This car was built from components especially for competitive use and did not have the ?portholes? in the rear engine covers that are a feature of all Tg?s. There was no upholstery and a ?sport? type top was fitted with the characteristic racing type half screen. This is believed to be the only known example of a Tg with the ?sport? top. Now owned by MOC member Colin Archer, this car is finished in distinctive metallic red and silver paint that is believed to be 1950?s BMW colours. Colin has gone to a lot of trouble to restore the car to original external appearance. He even traced the original ?sport? top to renowned German Messerschmitter, Bernd K?gler. Careful negotiations eventually re-united the original top with the Tg.</p>
<p>Particular attention was given to Tg gearboxes where many different ratios were produced to suit the various competitive events the Tg took part in. These were never offered publicly and only those supported by the factory had access to such special services. Some came to Britain and Ken Piper demonstrated their effectiveness very well in the various Tg?s he entered competitively. Another competitive driver by the name of Hans Wiesnet demonstrated his considerable driving skills in regularly beating Fritz Fend in driving events. Hans was deeply involved with the Messerschmitt from the beginning particularly with developing the KR175 and he owned the ninth KR175 to be produced. Tg owners today are much better served thanks to the efforts of Heiko Zimmermann. The crankshaft he helped to develop is significantly stronger than the original and is less prone to catastrophic failure. Another interesting discovery is the variation in ignition timing caused by the crankshaft deflection under load. This causes some variation in the ignition timing that can be avoided by fitting electronic systems using sensors rather than a crankshaft mounted cam with contact breakers. However, the Tg engine remains a temperamental beast requiring special care to avoid piston seizure and other engine damage. Bert Grimmer is developing a freewheel system for the Tg that will avoid the shuddering effect of the engine and transmission during over-run. This system was used on other two-strokes such as DKW and Trabant. Two strokes have little engine braking and smoothness is improved considerably with this device. MOC member Russel Church has arranged manufacture of new cylinder heads to correct a well known Tg weakness with blown head gaskets. These dedicated people are continuing to develop this engine, completing the work that FMR should have done!</p>

Launched in May 1958 to great acclaim from Messerschmitt fans in Britain, who were impatient for its arrival. Four months later, it reached us and we were not disappointed. Our Club welcomed Herr and Frau Fend for the first time for the official British launch of the Tiger on 29th September that year at Brands Hatch Circuit. In a typical gesture, Ing. Fend who learned of a meeting of our Club, voluntarily drove 200 kilometres further north to give us an unofficial demonstration one day before this amazing sports car was shown to the British press and public.</p>
<p>After the KR200 model variants were introduced, tests on the first four wheeled KaRo- the “Tiger” began in September 1957. The sales were aimed at existing KR 200 owners who had developed a faithful following in Germany with the many Karo Clubs. For legal reasons, the “Tiger” could only be called the “Tg”, (Tiger was also used by Sunbeam and Panhard). Only 198 examples can be traced of which 160 are known to exist today. The most sought after of Messerschmitts, (though it never bore that name – it was normally registered as an FMR). Surprisingly, the car cannot be called a Messerschmitt because it was built by FMR and this company was not authorised to apply that name to anything but the KR175, KR 200, and KR201. You will not see the Messerschmitt scrip badge applied to the lifting section on a Tg. Sports-car handling and high top speed brought many rally successes in the early sixties, particularly at the hands of Ken Piper. It was so good that the Rally organisers sought to exclude it from competition events where it took on all comers, including the most exotic sports-cars. It has a 460cc air-cooled twin 2-stroke engine, nominally of 26bhp though most have been up-rated now. A Fichtel &#038; Sachs design with four forward and a reverse gearbox with integral differential.</p>
<p>It was seen in all four body variants available on the KR200. With only 26 examples in the U.K. prices are extremely high and around three times that of a KR200. Although externally similar to the KR200, there is almost nothing the same. The lifting section is perhaps the only large component which is identical. In the late sixties and early seventies there was no organised parts service for the Tgs. A few owners said that good KR200 could be a close match to a Tg when it came to handling and acceleration through the gears. In addition, the U.K. the road tax applied to four wheeled vehicles was a serious consideration. Much more is known now about the performance and development of the engine and the improved designs of the later models have been applied to the early ones. Most now have uprated engines so the comment that a good KR200 is a close match, no longer applies.</p>
<p>The Tg500 was always difficult to obtain parts for, although surprisingly, the parts today are easier to obtain than they were during the years of production. This is thanks to the efforts of Heiko Zimmermann, from Neuss, Germany. Heiko has owned Tg500s for many years and organises spare parts for the remaining 199 documented production cars. Some years ago he produced a detailed history of every known vehicle, a task which represents hundreds of hours of work!</p>
<p>The engine is a 460cc twin cylinder two stroke which develops 23bhp. This does not make it much faster than the KR200, the wind resistance from those large rear wings see to that! The gearbox is conventional and similar to many vehicles of that era. Gear changes are hampered by the lack of Synchromesh, something that we take for granted in todays cars. The engine was originally a Fichtel &#038; Sachs design but was manufactured by FMR from components provided by outside specialist suppliers. It is thought that around 700 were made, these being used in the Australian Zeta sportscar and the Kultimax agricultural vehicle. The design is very similar to the Goggomobil and NSU engines of the same era. Unlike the KR200, the engine comes apart vertically, leaving all the components sitting in the lower engine half. The aluminium castings are very poor quality and great care must be taken when tightening any engine bolts as stripped threads are a constant hazard. A torque wrench is an essential tool for working on the engine.</p>
<p>A number of replicas have been built with authentic sounding versions using a Trabant engine and gearbox. Others have used Renault 4 cylinder units that are quiet and reliable but lack the authentic two-stroke sound.</p>

<p>For many years I have avoided becoming interested in the Tg500 as it always seemed out of reach for various reasons. In the sixties when I saw my first one, I soon realised that although it was externally similar to the KR200, there was almost nothing the same. The lifting section is perhaps the only large component which is identical. In the late sixties and early seventies there was no organised parts service for the Tgs and my enthusiasm for them was dulled by the comments from various former owners that a good KR200 could be a close match to a Tg when it came to handling and acceleration through the gears. In addition, the U.K. the road tax applied to four wheeled vehicles was a serious consideration. Much more is known now about the performance and development of the engine and the improved designs of the later models have been applied to the early ones.</p>
<p>It came as a big surprise to find that the car cannot be called a Messerschmitt because it was built by FMR and this company was not authorised to apply that name to anything but the KR175, KR 200, and KR201. You will not see the Messerschmitt scrip badge applied to the lifting section on a Tg. During my first trip to Germany in 1968,(with a schmitt of course). I had my first opportunity to buy one. The Frankfurt / Offenbach Karofreunde looked after us well and included a trip to a scrapyard where there was a rough looking example which was said to be roadworthy. From memory, this was priced at around ?40! but not a practical proposition on the low income I had at the time. The next opportunity was in January 1971, when returning from a holiday in Austria, I called in at the FMR facory in Lilienthalstrasse, Regensburg. At that time I did not speak more than a few words of German. In spite of that, my interest was enough to prompt the works management to offer me the factory race prepared car which had rested three metres up on top of the parts racking in the company of a KR 175 and a Fend Flitzer. For the equivalent of ?200 they would prepare the car for me to drive it back to the U.K. Again, sense prevailed and attractive though it was, it would never be a practical road car. Since then, I have had the opportunity to drive several different Tgs. They have always been regarded as an expensive car and that certainly has not changed over the years.</p>

<p>This car was originally owned by Testwood Motors of Southampton and was driven in some competitive events by Bill Street, the owner of the Company. Later it was driven with great success by Ken Piper, a well known Tg competitive driver of the sixties. Documents supplied with the car show a number of outstanding results in hill climb trials against large engined sports cars of the day including Porsche. It can be seen in one of the competitive events in Messerschmitt Gold Portfolio.</p>
<p>The car was later sold to Roger Garnett, a Midlands car dealer. Roger took the car on the MOC trip to Norway in 1963 accompanied by Mike Dan. Mike is the source of many excellent photographs of 500 BOR and many other atmospheric shots of the sixties. The car then changed ownership again to the then MOC Treasurer, Geoff Robinson. I first met Geoff in 1967 when I went to my first Club Commitee meeting at Malvern, Worcestershire. This was a 220 mile return journey in my KR200. Geoff picked up the Clubs finances at a time when they had been severely depleted by the dividing of the M.O.C. into two separate Clubs. Under his careful control the Club began to grow again and the later liaison with M.O.C. (London and South East), under the leadership of Lest Tilbury, led to the development of the excellent parts service we have today.</p>

<p>I first saw 500 BOR on an M.O.C. run to Crich Tramway Museum, Derbyshire, in 1971. Apart from some accident damage on the left hand front wing, it was in very good condition. Although it was originally finished in white, the car was resprayed Ford Sunset Red before 1964. The log book says it was originally blue and white though there is almost no evidence of this. After thirty years in red, it is to retain this colour when resprayed but with the original works shade of Monza red. When photographed racing in the early sixties, the car is shown with a “sport” type top. That is fixed sides with a small perspex windscreen and a tonneau cover. When this was finally removed at the end of its racing career, the car received a KR 200 lifting section which appears to have been accident damaged. This was previously blue and I suspect the original top was used to repair a damaged KR200 during the early racing days at Testwood Motors.</p>

<p>The engine was reputed to be much modified to achieve extra power, this did not help with driveability, and the engine was said to be prone to overheating. The modifications are detailed below:-<br />
1. Carburrettor throat increased to 30mm. This would allow more air into the engine.<br />
2. Carburrettor jets increased in size for first, second, and third stage throttle opening.<br />
3. Modified crankshaft, similar to the “Full Circle” type now available as a brand new item. However, the crankshaft fitted had reduced clearances less than the above type. The counterbalance weights taking up most of the Crankcase area.<br />
4. Reduced area below the piston. This was filled with a plastic resin type material, similar to body filler. There was just enough space to allow the pistons to reach bottom dead centre, thus achieving maximum crankcase compression. This modification was removed during the recent engine overhaul as the plastic had begun to break up.<br />
5. Multiple seal pack on the clutch side, this was to correct a well known Tg. fault of burning gearbox oil. It is very common to see one of the twin exhaust pipes smoking profusely, while the other remains clean. To prevent this, the seal is put in the “wrong” way round to prevent the oil coming from the Gearbox. The KR200 / Sachs engine has a doble lip seal to prevent leakage of gear oil into the crankcase. It was not possible to replace the modified seal pack as replacement seals were not available, therefore, an original seal was fitted.<br />
6. Lower ratio third gear; the previously high third was commented on in many of the road tests featured in “Gold Portfolio”. The later Tgs had this modified ratio to improve driveability.<br />
7. Tgs were fitted with a very large flywheel and this one had been reduced to a fraction of its former size to improve gearchanges. The latest modification is to replace the flywheel with a spacer. this does not have any adverse effect on th elow speed operation of the engine as the crankshaft has such a great metal mass, it acts as a flywheel without further assistance.</p>
<p>A VDO electronic rev counter was fitted in the sixtes, though it was not properly calibrated. This has gone to a VDO specialist in Germany for rebuilding with a modern elctronic mechanism. Timing and ignition for each cylinder function as two independent units, each having contact breakers and ignition coil. Recent research suggest that the Crankshaft deflects under heavy load, causing the timing to alter. One solution is to replace the contact breakers with contactless electronic ignition and a Trabant unit has been purchased for this purpose. Later two stroke engined Trabants were fitted with this system and it does not retain the mechanical / centrifugal advance and retard since the timing cam is removed. There was a suggestion that the removal of the advance / retard system would adversely affect performance. However, Heiko Zimmermann had met the engineer responsible for the development of this system for the Trabant, and he had stated that they could not measure a difference during testing. Everything is provided with the Trabant unit to convert to electronc control and this is especially easy as the Tg. and Trabant engine layout are similar.</p>
<p>Richard Harker has owned a KR201 bought from me in 1973, (I bought an engagement ring with the money!) Richards KR201 had recently been through a total strip restoration. He has many years of experience working on Messerschmitt bodies, and his job in a Car Bodyshop makes him an ideal choice to restore the body with the attention to detail that is required to keep it original.</p>
<p>During January 1997, while Richard was working on the Tg. a visiting Truck driver came into the Bodyshop, on seeing the Tg, he exclaimed “I used to own one of these”. Richard, like most of us, has heard this line many times before. Richard replied immediately: “I dont think it would have been one of these”. The visitor took a look at the dismantled rear suspension frame and said: “ah, yes this a four wheeler, my friend Roger Garnett had one of these. It used to be very fast.” He went on to explain that Roger now lived in Spain. Richard, of course, did not know of this and it was only when he later told the story to me that I was able to confirm that Roger had previously owned 500 BOR! He is still trying to find the man again, as he is still in touch with Roger in Spain.</p>

<p>Unfortunately I no longer own a ’schmitt but I made fantastic tours with these vehicles in the ’60s. It started with a used KR200 in 1959 bought for DM 1075 (at that time UK pounds 98!) The threewheeler got me on tours into France and Scandinavia being most reliable and hardly any tools needed on tour. Than I traded her in for a Tiger in February 1962 with the chassis ID Nr. 20517. The price DM 1800 or UK pounds 170!</p>

<p>My first tour was planned for France. Gearbox trouble got me to buy a stripped exchange engine. We started nearly broke to the Biscaya driving across the Massif Central which was a hell of fun. Winter 62/63 was a real rough one with the Rhine being frozen for 6 weeks. I faked a breakdown of the Tiger to my employer and the office gave me a Beetle with a slightly better heater to get to work in. Krons book very correctly shows the hassles of driving a Tiger. The guy in the spare parts shop of the Frankfurt Messerschmitt depot had the saying “If you drive a Tiger there is hardly anything left for living” Though it never spoiled the fun.</p>
<p>Summer 1963 my friend Wolfgang and I did another Scandinavian tour, this time with the Tiger, taking us through Norway, Sweden and Finland. You have to imagine that in those days most Scandinavian roads north of Oslo or Stockholm were gravel. On these roads driving a Tiger was hilarious fun. In five weeks we covered 6000 km, lost 5 wrenches when bleeding the brakes every 300 km or fixing the ignition or the silencers. The rear wheels touched the wings when jumping through the air on some of the Finnish country roads, burning the paintwork.</p>

<p>After returning from Scandinavia I took the Tiger to Britain, actually to Swansea, Wales. I had a job there for one year in a merchandise company called T.T. Pascoe selling car parts to the former Colonies. It didn’t take long until me and my Tiger was well known in Swansea and the surrounding country. They called it “The Bomb” and the police always had an eye on me because of my speeding down the Mumbles road. They never were able to catch me but came to my digs to warn me. People living in Mumbles on the hill also complained about the noise I made when coming up in second after closing time – another police visit was scheduled. I had a hell of a time there and only recently a former Welsh girl friend visited me here, talking about old Tiger times.</p>
<p>Even though the Tiger had a break down on an average of every 1000 km, I never was towed. I always got to my final destination. During my stay in Wales I went back to Germany twice. On my last trip to Wales the engine broke down two days after arrival. The crank bearing on the clutch side went. They sent me a replacement from Regensburg but without the seal ring. I went around Swansea and eventually got a leather one which worked fine for as long as I had the Tiger. Also the bearing for the clutch release went. Replacement was not in sight, so I drove around without a clutch for nearly 6 weeks!</p>
<p>The sad thing – after driving him for 50.000 km I sold the Tiger to a friend whose girl friend did not like it. Without me knowing it, the Tiger was left in the street to be picked up by scrap merchants and ended its life. Why oh why didn’t he tell me, I would have stored it away!</p>
<p>Today I drive a ’74 beetle and a ’61 Karmann Ghia convertable. I wouldn’t mind going on vacation with a Tiger or KR 200 again but unfortunately this is not the idea of my lady. Two years ago I drove Oliver Vogel’s KR 200 and also did some body work on one of his friends Karo so I keep in touch.</p>
